March 25th: Veneto People Day
Why a March to St. Mark to mark the 25th March?
San Marco day is on April 25th, isn't it?
Because according to the tradition on the 25th March, 421 AD, Venets from the mainland escaping the Goths and Huns invasions took refuge in the lagoon initiating the Venetian civilization, a civilization which in the centuries was to become the longest and most prosperous Republic in the world, known in the world as the Serenissima.
For this historic importance, highly symbolic and evocative,the Regional Council of Veneto - through Law 08/2007 - gave official recognition to the Venetian language, and stated that March 25 would become the "Festa del Popolo Veneto" (Veneto People Day).
So this relay race, that will take us from the countries of the hinterland to the historic capital of Venice, is a path in the memory of a People that is rediscovering more and more the deep roots of its identity.
